State environmental agency approves Wynn Everett casino project

Wynn Resorts’ Everett casino project is one step closer to finally breaking ground as it won a crucial environmental permit on Friday.

Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Matthew Beaton issued a 27-page ruling, stating that Wynn’s plan to address traffic and environmental impacts “adequately and properly complies” with the state Environmental Policy Act, which calls for development projects to take all reasonable measures to avoid, minimize and mitigate environmental damage.

Beaton also requires Wynn to participate in paying for a new transportation planning effort to address long-term traffic problems in and around Sullivan Square, which will be led by the state Department of Transportation.

The permit allows Wynn’s $1.7b Everett casino, the Massachusetts’s largest single private development, to go through other approval process such as a request for a state permit allowing the casino to be built on waterfront property and a building permit from the Everett Planning Board.

John Juanda wins EPT Barcelona main event after holding out for better deal

John Juanda has claimed the European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona main event title after a yearlong absence from the game.

On Sunday, Juanda claimed his first ever EPT title and a hefty payday of €1,022,593 after seeing off runner-up Steve Warburton, who settled for a mere €941,613 and third-place finisher Frederik Jensen, who took home €810,284.

The €5,300 buy-in main event attracted a field of 1,694 players, creating a prize pool of €8,215,900. Denys Shafikov was the dominant chip-leader among the nine players still contesting the outcome on the final day of play, but ended up finishing fourth, collecting €405,100 in the process.

The final four players briefly considered a deal to chop the pot but Juanda, despite having the shortest stack, was having none of it, as the split offered him only €150k more than he was already guaranteed. Juanda reportedly justified his refusal to negotiate by remarking: “And forfeit the chance for a million?” Touché.

William Hill Australia says in-play betting app is legal, has tripled in-play turnover

Anti-gambling campaigners have called UK bookies William Hill reckless and greedy for promoting their new in-play betting app despite concerns over the app’s legality, but Hills isn’t bothered.

This spring, William Hill Australia rolled out its Click To Call smartphone app, which relies on voice recognition technology to circumvent the country’s longstanding prohibition of online in-play sports betting. Me-too apps from local rivals Ladbrokes and Bet365 followed shortly thereafter, but these technological workarounds quickly caught the eye of regulators.

In July, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) confirmed that it had written to the three bookies to express the ACMA’s skepticism of the apps’ legality. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) launched an investigation of the apps and enlisted global cops Interpol to help their investigation based on the fact that some Aussie betting divisions’ servers are hosted outside the country.

Ladbrokes has mothballed its app until legal clarity emerges, but Hills and Bet365 continue to offer their respective services. A Hills spokesman told The Australian that the company remains “confident with the legality of the service and have obtained senior counsel advice to confirm this.”
