Las Vegas Sands settles six-year-old court fight with Sands China ex-CEO Steve Jacobs

Casino operator Las Vegas Sands has settled the nearly six-year-old wrongful termination suit brought by former Sands China CEO Steve Jacobs (pictured, far right).

On Tuesday, Sands China filed papers with the Hong Kong Exchange announcing a “confidential settlement of legal proceedings” between the company and Jacobs. The terse statement says, in its entirety:

“On or about May 31, 2016, the parties to the Proceedings reached a comprehensive and confidential settlement through which Mr. Jacobs dismissed all claims in the Nevada state and federal cases against our controlling shareholder, Las Vegas Sands Corp., the Company, our subsidiary Venetian Macau Limited, and Mr. Sheldon Gary Adelson and released all claims as of that date.”

Jacobs was unceremoniously ousted from Sands China in July 2010 for still murky reasons, despite having been credited by Las Vegas Sands COO Michael Leven only one year earlier for having “saved the ship” that was Sands China. Jacobs filed his wrongful termination suit that October and an extremely nasty war of words and writs ensued.

Northern Territory lures Betfair; in-play sports betting apps proving tough to kill

Australia’s Northern Territory approved legislation that authorizes exchange wagering as part of an apparently successful plan to lure Betfair Australia to the NT.

The NT is Australia’s premier online sports betting jurisdiction, with 13 corporate bookmakers calling it home. However, exchange betting was not on the NT’s menu, which meant Betfair’s down under division, which is owned by the NT-licensed CrownBet, is licensed by the Tasmania Liquor and Gaming Commission.

In mid-April, NT Gaming Minister Peter Styles introduced legislation he described as an “attractive lure” to coax Betfair north. Styles said the NT could offer Betfair a better financial shake – the company would pay around $805k in annual tax and fees – as well as a “quicker response to operational issues than the Tasmanian regulator.”

A Betfair spokesman told NT News that it would make sense for Betfair to be located alongside CrownBet and suggested the company would seek an NT license provided politicians approve Styles’ Racing and Betting Legislation Amendment Bill 2016 and “provided the regime is viable.”

Boyd Gaming sells 50% stake in Atlantic City’s Borgata casino to MGM Resorts

MGM Resorts is now sole owner of Atlantic City’s market-leading Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa after Boyd Gaming sold its 50% stake in the property to MGM.

On Tuesday, Boyd announced that it had sold its half-share in Marina District Development Holding Company, the unit that controls the Borgata, to MGM for around $900m. Boyd expects the deal to close sometime in Q3 2016.

Boyd says it expects to receive around $600m upfront after deducting its share of the Borgata’s debt. Boyd will also collect 50% of any future property tax settlements with Atlantic City, which could provide Boyd with another payday of up to $90m.

Boyd CEO Keith Smith said he’d been pleased with the Borgata’s performance but the sale offered “an attractive opportunity to immediately unlock significant value for our shareholders.” Smith said the proceeds would be used to reduce debt, which has increased due to a couple of recent Las Vegas-area acquisitions.

Tennis Integrity Unit clears Australian Open players of match-fixing allegations

Tennis officials have identified no wrongdoing by players at a mixed doubles event at the 2016 Australian Open.

This January, the New York Times published a report in which online sports betting operator Pinnacle Sports claimed it had halted wagering on a mixed doubles match at the Aussie Open based on an unusually large volume of bets placed shortly before the match was scheduled to start.

On Monday, the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) responded to an inquiry by the Wall Street Journal regarding the tennis body’s investigation into the matter. The TIU said that specifics of its investigation would remain confidential, but that “no evidence of corrupt activity has been identified and no further action will be taken against any player involved in the match.”

The match in question involved Lukasz Kubot and Andrea Hlavackova, who handily dispatched David Marrero and Lara Arruabarrena in straight sets by a score of 6-0 and 6-3. Pinnacle had claimed that the majority of the wagers placed on the match were on Kubot and Klavackova to prevail. All the players involved denied any knowledge of or involvement in match-fixing chicanery.
